About KGN
Kwaliteit Gasmeting Nederland BV (KGN) was founded in 2011 to check if containers arriving to the port of Rotterdam contain fumigants/pesticides and -/or production gasses in concentrations which are harmful to people, when opening these boxes.
KGN’s gaslabs are equipped with a SYFT-Voice 200 (Selective Ion Flow Tube mass spectrometry). This device identifies and measures a specified list of twenty gases within 2-5 minutes. The instrument can detect and identify over 400 different types of gases. On our drive through location we also have the possibility to work with GasMet DX4030 - FTIR analyser.
Via our “drive-through station” we can realize analysis within 5 minutes on the most common gases requested by local government. If needed we have the ability to remove the high concentrations of residual gas via a forced ventilation, which in most cases will remove the high concentration of gas within 2 days.KGN can offer you1 Measurement2 Ventilation3 Fumigation4 RI&E report5 Custom documents6 VWA inspection7 Storage containers8 Handling9 Transportation10 Physical Inspection

In that case the gas or vapor has to be taken out before the container can be declared fit for safe entering and discharge. This process can be done in two ways:
Natural ventilation: On a safe location the doors are opened during a certain time. The natural ventilation takes the excess of gases away. This is the technique in case of presence of the less dangerous vapors.
Forced ventilation: In a designed and recognized "defumigation zone" fans are connected by means of hoses to the container, trough a special door. The container is mechanically flushed during a certain time. This process will be applied in case of the presence of more toxic gases. In the case fumigation gases are present the exhausted air will be sent trough a filter system, where the fumigants are separated from the exhaust air.
Of course, after each ventilation operation a quality check must be performed. For this, fans are disconnected and/or container doors closed, for at least two hours. Then a new gas measurement is carried out. In most cases the container can then be released for safe discharge.Go Back - Our servicesGas concentration measurementEvery employer is responsible for the safety of his employees. Also when discharging containers from overseas. To determine whether a container is safe for entering, a gas measurement must be carried out by a specialized and licensed "gas doctor".
We measure on a standard and approved list of possible gases and vapors that can be present in a container.
Only when there is no exceeding of the limit levels, and the combination of the present gases doesn't give safety problems, the container is released for safe discharge.
Gas measurements can be carried out in the whole country. In the drive inn's we possess of equipment that uses the latest SIFT-technology (Selective Ion Flow technology) and FTIR technology. A highly accurate gasfree certificate can thus be delivered online, within a few minutes after presenting the container.
Gas concentration measurements on other locations can also be carried out with FTIR technology or hand measurement apparatus. Within about half an hour the measurement results and conclusions can be read online.Go Back - Our servicesLegislation the NetherlandsConcentrations of fumigants and vapors should not exceed the applicable Dutch limits. Applicable legislation is found in:
- Health and safety act (Arbowet)
- Dangerous substances act (Wet gevaarlijke stiffen)
- Environmental management act (Wet milieu beheer)
- Food and product safety (Wet voedselveiligheid en productveiligheid)
The most rules regarding this matter are found in the following articles of the Health and safety act (Law of March 18, 1999).- Article 3-3.5g

A procedure is established by the “Platform gases in containers” (PGIC) in cooperation with the NEN committee (KGN is also a member of this committee). This procedure will be included in Arbo catalogue in the second half of 2011. (See chapter 3)Go Back - Our servicesLegislation the NetherlandsFrom time to time containers are imported with an insect problem in the cargo. Then a curative fumigation with toxic gas can solve this problem. On the other hand importing countries can demand a fumigation certificate - or a phytosanitary certificate mentioning fumigation – before the imported container is allowed to be opened at destination.
For both problems we can deliver quick and easy solutions:- Fumigation of the container with Phosphine: for FOOD and FEED cargo.
- Fumigation with Sulfuryldifluoride ("SF"): for wood (pallets and packaging)
Both introduction of the toxic gas and the gasfree measurements are carried out by fully trained and licensed operators, called "fumigation leaders".Go Back - Our servicesBrown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB)The stink bug being an insect causes extensive damage to a variety of commodities. Goods shipped from risk countries need to undergo a heat treatment before being allowed to be imported into Australia and New Zealand. We have been licensed to execute BMSB Heat Treatments to ensure the goods may enter Australia and New Zealand. A full report by the Agricultural Government of Australia can be found on https://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/before/brown-marmorated-stink-bugs#what-are-the-measures-relating-to-goods as well as by the Ministry for Primary Industries of New Zealand on https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/current-alerts/brown-marmorated-stink-bug-threat-to-nz-and-identification/Go Back

SIFT-MS
Our gaslab is equipped with a Syft Voice-200 (Selective Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometer). This instrument can detect and identify over five hundred different gases.
For our purposes the Syft identifies and quantifies a specified list of twenty container gases within three minutes. The measuring range is up to 1000 x more sensitive than the traditionally used portable equipment.
The digital concept of the SIFT-MS makes it possible to implement the entire process, from sample taking till analysis reports in our digital quality system. Data reporting via internet creates real time communicationsGo Back -

GASMET TECHNOLOGY OY
Gasmet DX 4030/DX4040 is a lightweight infrared gas analyzer for ambient air analysis. It’s designed for applications where a number of compounds need to be accurately monitored in ambient air, such as container gases.
The Gasmet DX 4030/DX4040 measured 50 different kind of gasses during the first measurement. This is a exceptional wide range of gasses which are measured at once. In some cases the Gasmet DX4030/DX4040 can be programed to measure up to 5000 gasses.
Other examples are leakage detection, first response/HAZMAT type applications and various industrial hygiene applications.Go Back -

TRADITIONAL MEASURING EQUIPMENT
The “classic” way of gas concentration measurements in containers, still used by most of the companies, consists in the use of a combination of portable handheld devices. They each have their strong and their weak points.
PID : Photo ionization detection
The PID detects volatile hydrocarbons (VOC, volatile organic components). This method is indicative, but not selective. It provides a quick indication of most of the hydrocarbons present, but cannot determine which components. A positive reading on the PID should be followed by an additional measurement with gas detection tubes.
EC : electrochemical cells
Some – mostly – smaller molecules can be measured with specific electrochemical cells. In most cases a combination of EC’s is built in the PID handheld. Some examples of molecules are oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, phosphine and the Lower Explosion Limit.
Gas detection tubes
The oldest and most classic way to measure gas concentrations in air. An air sample is sucked by an hand pump trough a glass tube. The tube is filled with chemicals that will react with a specific gas in the air sample. By means of a scale on the tube the coloration can be translated in a gas concentration. Gas detection tubes are specific, but there is a lot of cross sensitivity. Due to external factors deviations in the results can go up to 30 %.
Correct interpretations of gas measurements with tubes requires a lot of knowledge and experiences. Otherwise the risk of invalid gasfree certificates becomes very realistic.Go Back
